2022 Men's Ballon d'Or nominees: Eighteen new faces compared to last year and an outgoing winner, Lionel Messi, absent.

For the 18th time in a row, the Portuguese Cristiano Ronaldo (37) is one of the nominees for the Ballon d'Or, unlike the Argentinian Lionel Messi (35), defending champion and seven-time winner of the trophy.

A great upheaval which undoubtedly betrays the end of a generation (Agüero, Bale, Luis Suarez...) and the difficulties of other leaders to stay at the top (De Jong, De Ligt, Griezmann, Hazard, Joao Felix, Neymar, Pogba, Sterling...).

From the 2019 list , only eight "resistants" (Benzema, De Bruyne, Mahrez, Lewandowski, Mbappé, Salah, Mané and Cristiano Ronaldo) continued in 2021 and 2022 (no edition in 2020). Behind the indestructible CR7, Benzema and his eleven presences casually return the impression of indisputable legitimacy over time. The proof, too, that staying in this elite remains difficult.

It should be noted that, for the first time since 2004, Argentina, Spain and Italy have no representatives. And that Portugal, with its four representatives (Joao Cancelo, Leao, Cristiano Ronaldo and Bernardo Silva) has never been so present since 2004 (Deco, Ricardo Carvalho, Cristiano Ronaldo, Figo and Maniche).

2022 Men's Ballon d'Or nominees list.

There are 30 players in total nominated for the men's prize - with half of the names on that list playing in this season's Premier League. This precisely means that the 2022 vintage of the Ballon d'Or is unprecedented.
